Abstract Line Art Project
What I love most about this project is that there isn’t really a right or wrong way. It’ll yield unique, beautiful results and really lets everyone show off their creativity. It also gives me that 80s/90s wild patterns vibe which is so fun!
There is no prep needed ahead of time and there are no rules, making this such an easy project to do last minute. It takes very few materials and there aren’t really explicit instructions so it would make for an easy sub plan activity or something to do in an “in between” week.
Even though there’s no theme to this, learning about lines and different art mediums is part of art curriculums everywhere so let the creativity out and enjoy this no rules project.
Time needed: 30+ minutes
Materials
Card stock paper
Pencil
Black oil pastel
Paint brush
Water based tempera paint (I use paint pucks)
Water cup
Steps:
Before starting, talk about different lines. Maybe brainstorm some ideas on the board.
straight, curly, zigzag, loops…
On your card stock, start by outlining your design. Go light with the pencil, even though we will attempt to cover it with the pastel, no one is perfect so we don’t want harsh lines showing through.
When creating your lines there are a couple things to note:
Make sure every line goes all the way to the next, we don’t want gaps
To get the best paint resist, bold and continuous pastel lines are best (rather than a sketching technique)
Don’t go too crazy, you want space to paint the sections. If the pattern is too complicated, it may be difficult to paint inside the section.
Using the tempera paint, paint each section. I tell my students that they can use the same colour for multiple sections, we just don’t want four blue sections next to each other so they should try to space it out a bit.
