Goofy Pumpkins Art Project
Who doesn’t love a silly pumpkin? This is another great October project to do, especially if you have students in your class who don’t celebrate Halloween. Pumpkins can be associate with Halloween but they are also just a fall staple! I have done this project with K and 2/3 so it is adaptable to the grade you teach.
Left - Kindergarten version
Right - Grade 2/3 version
The K version was very controlled and I had pre-cut a lot of things. Honestly, if I were to do it again I would give them way more freedom with it and get them to cut more stuff themselves. That was my first year teaching and I was still learning how to teach and wanted to make sure they had success with it. Looking back, I wish I had given them more freedom because the one thing I adore about K is the ridiculously bad art that’s just so cute. That being said, I thought this controlled project turned out great and I’m not upset about it!
*The K version was construction paper only. The 2/3 version has painted paper so additional steps.
Timeline: 1 hour (option 1) or 1.5 hours over two days (option 2)
Materials (option 1 - construction paper only)
Construction paper (orange, green, black)
White paper (half sheet per student - enough for eyes and teeth)
Pencil
Scissors
Glue stick
Materials (option 2 - painted paper)
Construction paper (orange, green, black)
White paper (half sheet per student - enough for eyes and teeth)
Pencil
Scissors
Glue stick
Tempera paint (orange, green, white, yellow)
Large paint brush
Water cup
Steps:
If using construction paper only, skip the painting steps and go to step 3
Each student will paint one orange sheet and one green sheet.
Mix the paint on the paper to give texture and dimension. No need to go right to the edge, we’ll be cutting this out anyways. Leave to dry completely.
Using the painted paper (or construction paper), cut out a pumpkin shape from the orange paper.
Now cut the grass, stem and spiral from the green paper. To make the spiral, cut a spiral like a snails shell into the paper and then stretch it out.
Glue your pumpkin onto the black background and add grass, stem and spiral.
Now make the face details with black construction paper and white paper. I give my kids complete freedom here, and the goal is to make them funny looking!
Glue the face details to your pumpkin, now you’re done.
