Haunted House Halloween Art Project

Nothing screams (heehee) Halloween like a spooky haunted house!

This is an easy project that can be adapted to suit any grade. There’s so much room for creativity!

Time required: 2 sessions (can be same day, but paint requires dry time so do it earlier in the day)

1 - 10-15 minutes

2 - 30-40 minutes

Materials session 1:

  • White paper

  • Yellow oil pastel or crayon

  • Watercolour paint (I use tempera paint pucks)

  • Large paint brush

  • Water cup

Materials session 2:

  • Black construction paper (1 per student)

  • Yellow construction paper (1/2 sheet per student)

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • Glue stick

  • Sharpie or black marker

Steps session 1:

  • Use oil pastel or crayon to draw a moon (any shape) somewhere on the top of the page.

    • Don’t use pencil to sketch it first, it’ll show through, just go for it with the pastel.

    • Avoid putting it in the middle and choose a side since their house may obstruct it too much.

  • Paint the background. I used three colours and tried to blend them a bit. Use a large brush and paint side to side, rather than in circle or up and down.

    • Below are other colour examples (dark purple/blue or warm sunset)

  • Leave to dry

Steps session 2:

  • Draw the outline of a haunted house on the black construction paper with a pencil.

    • I did it as one piece but if you have younger students who might struggle with this, they could cut out different shapes (rectangles, triangles etc.) and then glue them together to create a house.

  • Cut on the pencil lines.

  • Glue the house shape to the background.

    • Put the glue on the side with the pencil so that it doesn’t show when you glue it down.

  • Cut out a variety of shapes for windows and doors on the yellow construction paper.

  • Glue the yellow pieces onto the house.

  • Add details to the doors and windows with a Sharpie.

Below are some examples of different sunset backgrounds and different house shapes. Design it any way you want! We want to make them interesting and spooky!
