Painted Paper Christmas Tree Art Project

This is a simple, yet beautiful art project that could be done as a poster style or on a card. You will need multiple sessions to complete this project so make sure to account for that in your planning.

Time required:

Session 1 - 15 minutes

Session 2 - 20-30 minutes

This will need to be on two different days as there is some teacher prep in between

Materials session 1:

  • White paper

  • Liquid tempera paint (green, red, yellow) *if you have different greens, use them!

  • Large paint brushes

Materials session 2:

  • Painted paper from session 1

  • Black construction paper

  • Brown construction paper (small piece per student)

  • Scissors

  • Glue stick

  • Pencil

Session 1 steps:

  • No need to write names. This is going to be a group effort to make the painted paper.

  • Paint your paper using long strokes, not swirly.

  • Leave a small white edge around the paper

  • Leave to dry.

Green ONLY:

  • Each student will paint 1 green sheet.

  • Have a few students who finish early paint a yellow sheet.

Green & Red tree:

  • Divide the class in half. One half will paint red. One half will paint green.

  • Have a few students who finish early paint a yellow sheet.

TEACHER PREP IN BETWEEN SESSIONS

  • Once painted sheets are dry, they may have warped a bit. Weigh them down with heavy books.

  • Trim off the white part off the sheets (best done with a large paper cutter)

  • Slice the strips. They don’t need to be perfect or all the same width!

Session 2 steps:

*ATTENTION: Reminder that construction paper is easily dyed by glue. Instead of putting glue on the black paper, put the glue on your other pieces and carefully apply them to your background.

  • Cut out a small tree truck from the brown paper. Glue it to the bottom of your black page.

  • Use the paper strips to make a triangular tree shape. Start at the bottom and work your way up, getting smaller and smaller.

  • If you have different greens or are using red, try to space them out instead of all landing at one spot.

  • Cut out a star and add it to the top.

*OPTIONAL SNOW

  • add some snow with white pastel, crayon or pencil crayon. You can also mix a bit of white acrylic paint with a touch of water and splatter it to make snow.
