Rainbow Cityscapes Art Project

This is a great project to have in your back pocket as it’s non-seasonal. I pre-cut my strips but you could have students use rulers and cut their own. You can incorporate several elements like line, shape and pattern.

Time required: 30 minutes

Materials:

  • Black construction paper

  • Construction paper cut into strips (various colours)

  • White/grey construction paper (one square per student - for moon)

  • Glue stick

  • Scissors

  • Sharpie

Teacher prep:

I pre-cut my strips using the large paper cutter but you could have students cut their own. I cut them all the same length (along the short side of the paper) but students will cut each strip to their desired length.

Steps:

  • Choose 8-9 strips for buildings. Depending on thickness, you may need more or less.

  • Cut out a moon in any size and glue it onto the black background first. It may be fully visible or tucked behind the buildings.

  • Decide on the pattern of colours and height of each building. Cut buildings to desired height.

  • Glue the buildings onto the background.

  • Use the Sharpie to create shapes, lines or patterns on each of the buildings.
