Lunar New Year Lanterns (Paper Weaving) Art Project
Time required: 40-60 min
Materials:
Construction paper (red, orange, yellow)
Scissors
Glue stick
Tape
Pipe cleaner (red, orange, yellow or black)
Glitter (optional)
Steps:
Choose the main colour of your lantern. Fold a piece of construction paper in half (hamburger style) and draw half the lantern shape on the folded edge.
Cut out the shape.
While still folded, cut strips along the shape starting at the folded side and going towards the open side. Make sure you don’t go all the way through, leave some space near the open edge.
Cut the weaving strips. You could choose one or two colours.
Weave the strips into your paper lantern by using an alternating over/under technique.
Once you have filled the lantern with weaving strips, use a glue stick to stick down the edges of the strips to the lantern.
Cut off the excess part of the strips.
Choose a colour for the top and bottom edge of your lantern. Cut and attach to your lantern.
Make a handle by bending a pipe cleaner into a U shape and taping it to the back.
Make a fringe by cutting slits into the construction paper, but not all the way though.
Attach the fringe by gluing it to the back of the bottom edge. Put the glue on the part that doesn’t have any cuts through it.
Optionally add some glitter!
