Jar of Hearts: Valentine’s Day Art Project
‘Tis the season to collect all the love in our lives, hence the jar of hearts!
This project requires dry time and a little teacher prep in between day 1 and 2. If you don’t want to do painted paper, you can skip day 1 and just use construction paper.
Time required:
Day 1 - 30 minutes + dry time
Day 2 - 45-60 minutes
Materials Day 1:
White paper (printer weight) or construction paper
Liquid paint (red, purple, white, pink)
Large paintbrush
Materials Day 2:
Painted paper from day 1
White paper (1 per student) - card stock or printer weight
Scissors
Glue
Sharpie
Steps: day 1
We want to make lots of different colours so that we can have a jar full of different coloured hearts. We will be making the paper as a team so what student A paints today isn’t going to be their paper tomorrow. It will be shared.
Give students trays of paint that they can mix.
Paint the paper with mixed colours. Leave a little edge of non-painted paper so that it can be handled.
Set aside to dry.
Teacher prep before step 2
Once paper is dry, you’ll want to press it under something heavy to flatten it out.
Once flat, chop up the paper into chunks. This will allow students to use a variety of colours that were painted.

Part 1 - jar
Draw a jar on the white paper. Start with the lid, then draw the jar.
Make sure the jar is large and fils the majority of the paper. We want as much space as possible to put the hearts.
On the lid, you can write a message like “je t’aime” or “love hearts” or “Happy Valentine’s Day”.
Colour or shade in the lid.
Cut out the jar, leaving a small white edge .
Part 2 - hearts
Using the painted paper or construction paper, cut out a variety of hearts. Different sizes, shapes and colours.
Glue them into the jar
